My first round of the year was a casual one with Bambi and friends at Bangkok Golf Club. We had been out to Thaniya Plaza the night before to buy fashionable new shorts.

Sometimes one goes to a place so beautiful that the photos don’t quite do it justice. Here are four photos from the Gala Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen ski areas, looking over the town of Yuzawa in Japan’s Niigata prefecture with the Echigo Mountains in the background.

  Were it not for my noted reserve in pecuniary matters, I would have filled my bags with this canned Minke whale curry. Equally surprising is the jingusikan curry at right.

I ran a 10.5 km race this morning and was awarded this silver medal. I like to imagine that the medal represents my speed, strength, agility, and grace as I glide across the landscape much as a dolphin frolics in the sea.

I’m already training for the 317 km Hood to Coast relay in August. I won this impressive medal at the Fight Aids 10K race organized by the Department of Public Health in Bangkok a few weeks ago.

Does finishing 2nd count as a defeat? In some circles it may, but when you win a big white shoe bag adorned with pink and purple ribbons, it sure feels like a great victory.

I made a two-day visit to Hua Hin this week to visit two golf courses (Banyan Golf Club (now Pineapple Valley Golf Club Hua Hin) and Springfield Royal Country Club) and to enjoy the salubrious weather prior to Christmas, and to make a discreet reconnaissance of this popular resort area in advance of my sisters’ impending visit to Thailand.
